ICTPeace was invited by the Organization of American States (OAS) to participate in a Workshop with Parliamentarians from the OAS on (27-28 February 2019) on Cybersecurity and Strengthening Democratic Processes in OAS Region at Oxford University. The program can be found here.
While Dr Daniel Stauffacher, ICT4Peace examined in his panel what is meant by an open, safe and stable cyberspace, the achievements at the international and regional level and the main considerations for parliamentarians in the international debate on cyberspace stability he also underlined the importance of the international cooperation for peace and security in cyberspace.
Dr Eneken Tikk, ICT4Peace in turn explored ethical considerations in political conflict in cyberspace by examining threats both real and perceived (espionage, terrorism, state actors, non-state conflict behaviour) on an international, regional and national scale, and what is the role of Governments, Parliamentarians, civil, military or private stakeholders?
In the Q&A and discussions following the presentations, the Parliamentarians from the OAS Region underlined time and again the urgent need for capacity building in OAS countries to address the increasing Cybersecurity challenges while strengthening democratic processes in developing and emerging economies.
