ICT4Peace is deeply mourning the loss of President and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Martti Ahtisaari.

Martti was a great friend, mentor and leader for all of us at ICT4Peace. He was a great humanitarian, a strong believer in fairness and convinced that conflicts can be overcome and peace be built. He was one of the great peacemakers and mediators of our times.

He was also strong believer that ICT’s can be useful tools to support peacebuilding, peacekeeping, humanitarian operations and human rights protection.

It was therefore no a surprise that Martti was an early supporter of ICT4Peace since 2004 and helped launch the groundbreaking  ICT4Peace Report “Information and Communication Technology for Peace – The Role of ICT in Preventing, Responding to and Recovering from Conflict and celebrate the approval of Paragraph  36 of the Tunis Commitment of the UN World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) at the WSIS in Tunis in 2005.
