ICT4Peace and UN CTED and their joint project Tech against Terrorism (see more on ICT4Peace’s work here) hosted on 1 August 2017 the U.S. launch of the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) at Swissnex in San Francisco.
Rt Hon Amber Rudd MP, the United Kingdom Home Secretary and United States Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke — as well as representatives from Australia, Canada, the European Union and the United Nations attended the meeting.
On that occasion, representatives from the tech industry, government and non-governmental organizations came together to share information and best practices about how to counter the threat of terrorist content online.
Formed in May 2017 by Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and YouTube, the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism supports the cooperation of tech companies to curtail the spread of terrorism and violent extremism online. The GIFCT is also fostering collaboration with smaller tech companies, civil society groups and academics, and governments. See als the press release of the GIFCT.
CTED and ICT4Peace are partners with Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter, and YouTube in supporting the recently announced industry-led Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism. TechAgainstTerrorism.org is a joint initiative between CTED and ICT4Peace, pursuant to UN Security Council resolution 2354 (2017) and the mandate of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee and its Executive Directorate (CTED).
