The UN Counter Terrorism Executive Directorate (UNCTED) and ICT4Peace officially launched on 29 November 2017 the Tech Against Terrorism Knowledge Sharing Platform (KSP) at the UN Headquarters in New York. This Project is supported by the Governments of Korea, Spain and Switzerland, as well as Microsoft, Facebook, Google and Telefonica.
Tech Against Terrorism is a UN CTED-mandated project implemented by ICT4Peace to build capacity of tech companies to prevent their platforms from exploitation by terrorists and violent extremists, while also respecting human rights. ICT4Peace and the UN Counter Terrorism Executive Directorate are also collaborating with Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter, and YouTube to support the recently-announced industry-led Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT). Tech Against Terrorism is implemented by ICT4Peace pursuant to the United Nations Security Council resolution 2354 (2017) and the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee Comprehensive International Framework to Counter Terrorist Narratives (S/2017/375).
Now in Phase 2, Tech Against Terrorism works with smaller tech companies and startups to provide operational support and build online tools to underpin long-term capacity growth. This work feeds into the online knowledge-sharing platform which is a resource freely accessible to all organisations seeking help and guidance. This project advocates the strengths of an industry-led, self-regulatory approach to tackling terrorist use of technology.
At the core of it all is a focus on respecting human rights and freedom of speech.
